❓ FAQ – 3-week itinerary in Bolivia

Is it possible to do this itinerary without flying?

Yes, it’s possible, but it makes for longer journeys (especially to Rurrenabaque). Choose night buses and optimized routes. Flying is still useful if you want to get the most out of each region without spending 20 hours on the bus.

Do I need to book excursions in advance?

For Salar d’Uyuni, Sud Lipez and Rurrenabaque, it’s advisable, especially in high season (June to September). You can also book on site, but it’s a bit riskier in terms of space and the quality of the guide.

How to avoid altitude sickness?

Climb gradually, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first few days, and take time to acclimatize to La Paz or Sucre. Some people also take preventive medication (talk to your doctor if you want to plan ahead).

Do I need to speak Spanish?

It’s not compulsory, but a few basic phrases will help you enormously. In remote areas, English is rarely spoken. A small notebook or translator app may suffice for everyday situations.

Which SIM or eSIM card to choose?

You can buy a local SIM (Entel or Tigo), or opt for an international eSIM if you want to be connected as soon as you arrive. Handy if you work online, or for hassle-free WhatsApp calls.
