Licancabur: Climbing a Sacred Volcano at Nearly 6,000 m Altitude

Among the many majestic volcanoes of Bolivia, Licancabur stands out with its perfect silhouette and mystical symbolism. Perched at 5,916 meters, it silently watches over Laguna Verde, on the border between Bolivia and Chile. From the icy shores of Sud Lipez, we gaze at it with respect, sometimes with a slightly crazy desire to reach its summit. It’s a challenge. A dream for those who love high peaks. And good news: you don’t need to be a professional mountaineer. You just need to be motivated, acclimatized, and well-prepared.

📍 Where is Licancabur Volcano located?

Licancabur is located in southwestern Bolivia, in the heart of the Sud Lipez desert, right on the border with Chile. It is this perfect conical peak that dominates Laguna Verde. The starting point for the ascent is on the Bolivian side, from the shelters near Laguna Blanca, at an altitude of approximately 4,300 m. It is accessible by 4×4 as part of a tour or private expedition.

⛰️ What to Expect During the Climb?

📋 Fact Sheet

  • Altitude: 5,916 m
  • Elevation Gain: +1,300 m
  • Duration: 7 to 8 hours round trip
  • Level: demanding but non-technical

🥵 Challenges of the Route

You start around 4,300 m, in a deserted pampa. Very quickly, you tackle the slope. No well-marked path, just a trail delicately formed by previous trekkers. The ground is unstable, made of small scree and volcanic sand. You progress slowly, very slowly. Short of breath, heavy legs. And the higher you climb, the colder it gets. It’s very cold at the summit, especially with the wind often picking up late morning.

🧗 Do You Need a Guide?

Yes. It’s mandatory on the Bolivian side. For safety reasons, environmental protection, and also because you are in a sensitive border area. You can go through an agency in Uyuni, Tupiza, or organize it from your Sud Lipez tour.

The guide accompanies you, sets the pace, and manages the timing. They also know the best routes to avoid slips or areas too exposed to the wind. Expect to pay between 50 to 100 dollars for the ascent.

⚒️ Equipment Needed

  • Warm technical clothing: multiple layers, beanie, gloves, down jacket
  • Trekking poles: almost essential for balance
  • Sturdy hiking boots with good soles
  • Headlamp (you leave very early)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Water (with your OKO Water Bottle)
  • High-energy snacks (almonds, energy bars, dried fruit)

And of course, your camera or an Insta360 to capture this unique moment.

📷 Summit Panorama

What do you see from the summit? First, the crater. Sometimes even a small frozen lake at its center. And then, the 360° view: Laguna Verde and Laguna Blanca below, the Parinacota, Sajama, and Pomerape volcanoes on the horizon. All bathed in a raw, almost supernatural light. You feel like you’re at the edge of the world.

🌎 Preparation and Acclimatization

It’s vital. If you’re not acclimatized, you won’t enjoy anything. Ideally, spend 4 to 5 days at over 3,500 m before the ascent. For example:

  • 2 days in La Paz
  • 2 days in Sud Lipez (Uyuni, lagoons, etc.)
  • 1 night at the refuge at 4,300 m before departure

Drink plenty of water, sleep well, avoid alcohol. And if you feel altitude sickness coming on (headaches, nausea…), inform your guide.

🚗 How to Get to Licancabur?

The simplest way: combine this ascent with a 3 or 4-day tour in Sud Lipez. You can depart from:

  • Uyuni: classic starting point for tours
  • San Pedro de Atacama (Chile): more direct access but formally forbidden to ascend from the Chilean side without authorization

You sleep the night before in a basic refuge near Laguna Blanca. Prepare for rustic but magical conditions.

📱 Filming the Experience with an Insta360

Licancabur is the dream spot to take out your Insta360. Fixed shot at the summit with Tiny Planet, drone effect thanks to the invisible selfie stick, or a time-lapse of the sunrise over Laguna Verde.

Quick tip: keep your battery warm against you during the ascent, otherwise it might freeze.

💬 My Experience

The ascent of Licancabur remains one of the most impactful experiences of my trip. You feel tiny in front of this stone monster. The last 200 meters are an ordeal, but when you reach the top, breathless (from the effort and altitude), it’s just magical. That silence. That wind. And that view. No words can truly describe it. Just: do it.

✅ Practical tips

  • Depart between 3 AM and 4 AM: aim for the summit at sunrise
  • Don’t overestimate your fitness: climb slowly
  • Protect yourself from the cold, even if it’s sunny at the bottom
  • Slippery descent, poles are useful
  • Respect the mountain, leave nothing behind

🛍 Conclusion: Should You Attempt Licancabur?

If you are acclimatized, reasonably fit, and want to experience a powerful moment, then yes. A thousand times yes. It’s one of the most aesthetic, symbolic, and accessible peaks in Bolivia. You won’t come back the same. So, pack your bag, slip in an OKO Water Bottle, an Insta360, and go climb this sacred giant.
